Un-called for controversy of CBI Director appointment

The BJP being the main opposition party should act with responsibility and positivity at least on some issues with the government. Being in opposition does not mean that it should oppose all government act without any rhyme and reason. Rather, it should play the role of a constructive opposition and present before the nation how it would improve the governance if it was given mandate in the coming Lok Sabha elections. BJP’s programme and policy must not be centred on only saying that the ruling UPA coalition is going worse and worse. As far as the issue of appointing CBI Director is concerned, the UPA Government has not violated any established norms in the appointment of the new CBI Director Ranjit Sinha, a Bihar Cadre IPS and ITBP Director. The post of CBI Director can not lie vacant even for a single day. In the given situation how it could be kept in abeyance pending Select Committee Report on Lokpal in Rajya Sabha. Select Committee reccomends the appointment of CBI Director by a Colegium consisting of Prime Minister, Chief Justice and leader of the Opposition. It is a good idea and it would also bring transparancy in the appointment of CBI Director. Select Committee reccomendation will take a considerable amount of time in going through all parliamentary proceedings and taking the shape of law. That is why the appointment of such an important functionary can not be kept in abeyance for a long time. PM Manmohan Singh has rightly rejected BJP’s demand to hold in abeyance the appointment of new CBI Dir Ranjit Sinha and termed as unwarranted insinuation the charge that the decision was to preempt the procedure recommended by the Select Committee on Lokpal. The Prime Minister has also rightly said that the premier investigating agency could not be kept without a head pending the enactment of the Lokpal and the question of keeping the new appointment in abeyance does not arise. BJP is itself divided over the appointment issue of CBI Dir. Senior BJP leader and veteran criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani has lambasted the party over its demand to keep the appointment of CBI Director in abeyance and praised the government and the Congress Party on the issue. Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj had written letters to the Prime Minister saying that appointment of the new CBI Director should not have been done when the Rajya Sabha Select Committee had recommended that such appointments should be done through a collegium.
